Electrical Safety Check Sydney

What is an Electrical Safety Check?

An electrical safety check is a comprehensive inspection of a property’s key electrical systems and equipment. Alliance Climate Control electricians are fully licensed to assess all electrical installations, fittings, and wiring to ensure there are no faults, hazards, or non-compliance issues in the system.

A Alliance Climate Control electrical safety check will include:

  • Switchboard test: The control panel for your entire electrical system, making sure your switchboard has all the appropriate wiring, surge protection, and safety switches, is essential.
  • RCD test: A Residual Current Device (RCD), a type of safety switch, helps prevent electrical shock when an electrical fault occurs. Testing for safety switches should be conducted every 6 months.
  • Smoke alarm test: A smoke alarm should be replaced every 10 years, and an electrician will ensure the device is up to date. They will also check the batteries, sensors, and circuitry of your smoke detector, clean it if necessary and verify its power lights.
  • Visual wiring inspection: A systematic, noninvasive check of all wiring in switchboards, property cabling, and electrical installations. The electrician will look for wear and tear, damage, or noncompliant wiring.
  • Earthing check: A safety system that connects conductive metal parts of an electrical system to the ground. In the event of an electrical emergency, faulty currents are redirected into the earth, preventing electrical shocks. An electrician will check continuity, electrode resistance, and the bonding to metal services.
  • Appliance check: An electrician will check all cords, leads, plugs, sockets and casings of appliances to ensure they are working properly. They will tag each appliance with the tester’s name, test date, and the next test date. If an appliance fails, it will be tagged accordingly.

AS/NZS 3019:2022 and AS/NZS 3760:2010 outline the standards for the periodic assessment of electrical installations and the in-service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment. All electrical work is required to adhere to these standards, and safety checks by qualified professionals ensure

Why are Electrical Safety Checks Important?

Like anything, our electrical systems don’t last forever. But sometimes, we forget to think about our electricity, especially when schedules fill up, and we get used to the quirks of our homes and workspaces.

Sadly, this can have dire consequences. Each year, 40% of house fires in NSW are caused by electrical faults or appliances. Electrical safety checks help prevent these fires, identifying risks, hazards, and damage before they become dangerous.

When to Book an Electrical Safety Inspection in Sydney

Conducting a regular electrical safety inspection is crucial to protecting your home, workplace, or business. Electrical experts recommend having your electrical system inspected every 3 to 5 years. For older homes and properties, particularly those built before the year 2000, a safety inspection should occur every 2 years.

Debating whether you need a safety inspection? Consider these questions:

  • Have you never had a comprehensive Home Safety Check done?
  • Was your last electrical inspection conducted over 5 years ago?
  • Are you buying or selling a property?
  • Is your household over 20 years old?
  • Have you noticed electrical issues around your home?

If the answer to any of these questions is ‘yes,’ it’s time to schedule a safety check-up. It’s important to rely on professional electrical services with fully insured and qualified electricians to conduct these inspections.

When you book an electrical safety check with Alliance Climate Control, our number one priority is your safety and the safety of your home. During our inspection, we will:

  • Carry out a visual inspection of electrical wiring, switches, and powerpoints, noting any issues we see immediately.
  • Conduct detailed testing of circuits and power points, taking into account any concerns you may have noticed yourself.
  • Thoroughly audit your switchboard, safety switches, and metre box.
  • Test and tag electrical appliances as necessary.

Once we have concluded our inspection, our electrician will provide you with a full written report and recommend any urgent or future repairs you may need.

Common Electrical Hazards

The common electrical hazards we look for during a safety inspection include:

  1. Exposed live parts, such as stripped wires, terminals, or conductors. These issues need to be addressed immediately as they pose a serious threat to your safety.
  2. Vermin activity, particularly by rodents and insects, can pose serious fire and electrical hazards. Chewed through equipment, nests, and erosion caused by their excrement can lead to significant damage to your system. Securing your circuit box and executing regular cleanings is key to preventing this.
  3. Asbestos, lead, and other harmful materials can be extremely dangerous, especially if disturbed. A professional needs to carry out proper clearing and disposal procedures.
  4. Main earth disruptions caused by unsecured connections and corroded equipment need to be identified and dealt with. If not, faulty currents can be distributed ineffectively, causing serious electrical risk.
  5. Rewirable and ceramic fuses are no longer safety compliant and are linked to electrical fire incidents. These need to be replaced by a combined circuit breaker and safety switch unit.
  6. Safety switches for power outlets, lighting circuitry, and other circuits cut the power in the event of an electrical fault. These switches are mandatory in NSW and need to be installed in order to be safety compliant.
  7. Recalled cable products can occur over the years. Our electricians can discuss whether you may be at risk.
  8. Outdated Switchboards are particularly common in older homes and often contain outdated equipment, corroded materials, and loose hinges. These hazards can increase the potential for electric shock or fires. If your switchboard is outdated, we offer switchboard upgrade services and can help you ensure your control centre is compliant, operational, and safe.

Electrical Safety and the Workplace

For businesses and workplaces, electrical inspections are also necessary and are a workplace safety issue. According to SafeWork NSW, a competent person is required to regularly inspect and test your workplace’s electrical equipment to identify damage, wear, and detect faults.

The relevant Australian standards for this kind of electrical inspection are laid out in AS/NZS 3760 and AS/NZS 3012, and mandate that a record of testing should be kept until the next test occurs.

To keep your workplace WHS compliant, book a safety inspection today with Alliance Climate Control!

How to Prepare for Your Safety Inspection

Whether you are a homeowner, tenant, or landlord, preparing your property for a safety inspection can help it run more smoothly. Beforehand, it’s a good idea to:

  • Do a preliminary check over your wiring, switchboard, appliances, safety switches, and smoke detectors. Be sure to notify your electrician of any problems you may have noticed.
  • Complete any basic repairs and maintenance before you have your inspection.
  • Use a checklist to regularly track any of your electrical upgrades, maintenance, or repairs.
  • Provide clear information about your home and electrical system, including:
    • Property address, building type, and use
    • Previous inspection reports
    • Known issues
    • Wiring layout or schematics, if available
    • Appliance types and ages
    • Smoke alarm locations, type, and report record
    • Age, upgrades, and repairs done on your switchboards, circuits, or wiring
    • Paperwork showing recent work conducted and compliance documentation

Making this information prior to inspection helps electricians assess your system more accurately. It also makes the inspection go more quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is recommended that full electrical safety checks be carried out, depending on the age of your home. For newer homes, a safety check should be conducted every 3 to 5 years. For older homes, or homes older than 25 years, a safety check is recommended every 2 years. If you are renting, mandatory inspections occur every 2 years.

The cost of an electrical safety check will depend on the size and age of the property being inspected. The scope of the inspection will also contribute to the cost.

For a standard residential home in Sydney, a safety check can cost between $150 and $400, with the average price falling between $200 and $300.

Damaged electrical systems in the home can be extremely dangerous, leading to electric shocks or electrocution, burns, and fires. All of these can be deadly. The most common causes of these risks include:

  • Overloaded circuits
  • Frayed, aged, or exposed wiring
  • Water-related accidents
  • Outdated hardware and equipment
  • Lack of safety switches

Conducting a regular electrical safety inspection of your home is a key way to avoid these hazards and keep your home safe.

If you notice signs of electrical damage, like frayed wires, scorch marks, flickering lights, burning smells, or frequently tripped circuits, it’s important to cut power to the area immediately. Unplug any damaged appliances, switch off powerboards or powerpoints, and call a licensed electrician.

Alliance Climate Control has a 24/7 emergency response team and is capable of responding to your electrical emergencies.

In the event of an electrical fire, call emergency services immediately. Never use water to douse an electrical fire, as it acts as a conductor of electricity and can lead to electrocution or further damage. Instead, if available, use a dry fire extinguisher.

An electrical safety inspection will normally include:

  • Switchboard test
  • RCD test
  • Smoke alarm test
  • Visual wiring inspection
  • Earthing check
  • Appliance check

At the end, the electrician will provide you with their audit reports.

If electrical damage is found during your safety check, the action taken will depend on the severity of the damage and the risk it poses to you and your property. It will also depend on the type of building being worked on, whether it is an apartment, workspace, or residential home. In the event of severe damage, actions should be taken to mitigate the risks the damage poses as soon as possible.

In NSW, all electrical work is legally required to be carried out by a licensed electrician. While there are components you may be able to conduct yourself, the safety check itself should be conducted by a professional electrician. What you can do is prepare your home for the safety check by:

  • Test RCDs every 6 months using the ‘T’ or ‘Test’ button
  • Check your smoke alarms
  • Visual inspection of equipment, noting any discolouration, scorch marks, loose fixtures, or damaged cords
