Home Battery Installation For Sydney Homes

Optimise Your Solar Power Storage

home battery

Make the most of your solar power system by installing a residential battery to store your excess solar power. Home batteries act as an independent power bank for your home, recharging via your solar system and storing excess electricity produced.

This helps you lower energy bills, gives you backup power during outages, and optimises your renewable energy usage. If you have an Electric Vehicle, you can also use it to charge your car battery.

Electricians Sydney by Alliance is here to help you choose and install the right home battery system for your household. Even though residential battery systems are a relatively new phenomenon, we already have extensive experience installing them in homes.

With a 100% service satisfaction guarantee and quality materials, our licensed electricians are up to the task and ready to help you save money and the environment!

Home Batteries and Your Solar Power System

Since July 2025, the Australian Government has offered a 30% discount on eligible small-scale battery systems under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program to encourage solar energy storage and use.

If you already have a solar power system, it’s a good idea to have a home battery installed so you can avoid a network distribution tariff from your energy retailer. Between 10 AM and 3 PM, solar systems across the country flood local power grids with unused power simultaneously, putting strain on infrastructure.

In response, retailers are charging an extra fee for dumping power on overloaded grids. You can avoid this with a residential battery system and receive a premium bonus credit for exporting energy during peak demand times.

To take advantage of the solar battery rebate, you will need:

  1. An existing solar system or looking to install one. Your solar panels need to be a minimum 5 kW system.
  2. Choose a battery model certified by the Clean Energy Council’s approved batteries list.
  3. Select a battery with the correct kWh size for your energy needs.

Costs, Savings, & Battery Benefits

The upfront cost of a battery will vary depending on the size, model, and installer you choose. On average, the NSW Government estimates it can cost between $6,000 and $24,000, but you can receive an upfront discount through the solar batteries program and will pay back your investment in approximately 7 years while enjoying free energy for a further 3-8 years.

Virtual Power Plants and Retail Plans

Additionally, if you join a Virtual Power Plant (VPP), you can receive payments for storing excess power. VVPs are a network of connected batteries that allow for unused stored power to be sold to the grid during peak demand. With this scheme, you can earn up to $300 a year in direct payments or electricity bill credits. Not only will you save money, but you can also help contribute to the reduction of 70% of NSW’s commission by 2035.

Other battery storage benefits include:

  • Blackout protection
  • Reduced power bills
  • Sustainable, renewable energy independence
  • Reduced reliance on grid power systems
  • Charge electric vehicles using excess solar power during peak times

Home battery units are incredibly safe to use when installed correctly by accredited technicians like those at Electricians Sydney By Alliance. As with any electrical hardware, safe operation depends on safe installation.

The Electrical Regulatory Authorities Council (ERAC) requires all residential batteries in NSW to be installed in line with AS/NZS 5139:2019 Electrical Installations and AS/NZS 3000:2018 Wiring Rules. These safety requirements include:

  • Use of certified and accredited technicians for installation
  • A battery unit cannot be installed in living areas, hazardous areas, ceiling spaces, or around key exits or entryways
  • 1m clear space for emergency access and service area
  • Clearance distances for positioning
  • A fire-rated protective barrier is required if an installation wall backs onto a habitable room

These help prevent the risks of fire, explosions, and chemical exposure posed by lithium-ion batteries. Fire and Rescue NSW have safety tips on their website for greater safety awareness and responsible action.

For safe, secure installation of residential home battery units, trust Electricians Sydney By Alliance. We handle the entire process from site inspection and product recommendations to installation and set-up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Whether home battery storage is worth it will depend on whether you have an existing solar power system/are looking to install one, or not. If you do have a solar system or want one, it is worth considering investing in a home battery for these reasons:

  • Government rebates on storage and installation
  • Earn up to $300 a year via a VPP
  • Provides backup power during blackouts
  • Reduced electricity bills
  • Sustainable, renewable energy independence
  • Charge electric vehicles outside of peak hours

Typically, the size of the battery bank you will need to run a house is 10 kWh to 4 kWh of battery storage. However, the exact size you will need depends on your energy use and the size of your home.

Yes, when a home battery is installed correctly and by accredited professionals, they are incredibly safe. They have inbuilt protective mechanisms like thermal sensors and automatic shut-off, which will prevent damage and safety risks to users.

As with any large electrical unit, risks can emerge when a battery unit is damaged, faulty, or installed incorrectly.

Yes, it is worth joining a VPP because the NSW Government has several rebate schemes that will help you save money on your energy expenditure and can help you earn payouts either directly or by bill credits.

However, a VPP may reduce your energy independence if you rely on your battery for blackout protection or want absolute control over your battery expenditure.

Yes, home battery units can help during power outages as they provide backup power storage to keep essential appliances working when there is a blackout.

Most batteries have an average lifespan between 10 and 15 years and are lithium-ion batteries that require limited maintenance. However, as with any piece of equipment, basic maintenance like cleaning, professional inspection, and routine monitoring is necessary to keep your battery functional and safe.
