Electrical Fault Detection Sydney

Electrical Fault Finding for Safer Sydney Homes

At Alliance Climate Control, we are well-equipped to carry out electric fault detection procedures for residential and commercial properties. We provide licensed, warrantied, and insured electrical services across Sydney, continuing to work until you’re satisfied with the job.

Electrical fault finding, or fault detection, is the process of assessing and diagnosing the causes of abnormal electrical activity within a building’s electrical system.

Most electrical devices or systems will wear or break down over time, and sometimes there’s hidden damage. Electrical fault detection can be obvious, like seeing noticeable scorch marks on a power point. Other times, an electrical fault may be more subtle or dismissed as mundane, like a frequently flickering light. Regardless, when these signs pop up, it’s important to have them addressed by a licensed electrician.

During their assessment, an electrician will work to identify and isolate the issue. Once a fault has been found, it’s important to remedy the issue immediately, before they become a larger, more dangerous problem.

With Alliance Climate Control, our expert electricians are committed to the job until you’re completely satisfied with their work.

Our 5 Step Electrical Fault Detection Process

Alliance Climate Control licensed electricians are highly experienced in inspecting and servicing Sydney-siders’ homes and businesses. When we are called out to conduct an electrical fault detection, during our inspection, we will:

  1. Discuss the Symptoms: We’ll discuss the concerns you have and where the fault might originate. Based on the described symptoms, we’ll conduct our own visual inspection
  2. Inspect the System: Next, we’ll inspect the exterior and interior of your electrical system. We will inspect your switchboard components, circuits, power points, switches, and appliances. This may include conducting:
    • Insulation resistance testing: a safety procedure used to measure the resistance of the electrical insulation in cables. This is done by injecting a high DC voltage into cables using a megohmmeter tool.
    • Circuit tracing: how to locate the exact physical path of electrical wiring in a wall, or identify the path from the circuit breaker to a specific power outlet.
    • Thermal imaging: A diagnostic technique that is non-invasive and uses infrared cameras to detect abnormal thermal patterns in electrical systems. It’s used to find hot spots and cold zones in wiring, circuit breakers, and switchgear that may be the cause of an electrical issue.

These tests will help us locate the electrical problem safely and ensure we can resolve it.

  3. Identify & Isolate the Problem: Once we’ve identified the problem, we can properly isolate it and better understand how to remedy it. This often involves more testing of circuits and subsystems to pinpoint the exact area responsible for the fault.
  4. Fix the Fault: After we’ve isolated the fault, we can safely repair the damage and/or replace the hardware.
  5. Test: Once the repair is finished, we will conduct a test of the system and equipment, ensuring the fault is resolved and your property is safe.

At Alliance Climate Control, we have a 100% service satisfaction guarantee and a lifetime workmanship warranty. This ensures our work is carried out to the highest standard and meets the needs of our customers.

The Types of Equipment & Tools We Use

Electricians

During our diagnostic tests, we use a range of equipment to help correctly verify the root cause of an electrical fault. We work with equipment and tools such as:

  • Megger (megohmeter), for testing insulation in cables, transformers, and motors
  • Thermal imaging/infrared cameras to detect internal thermal patterns of electrical systems
  • Multimeters, which measure low-voltage fundamental electrical characteristics like voltage, current, and resistance
  • A clamp meter, to measure high AC currents, and occasionally DC, without turning off the power
  • Circuit tracer, wire tracer, or toner, for finding the physical path of specific wires and outlets

These tools and equipment help us work on your electrical systems safely, and help us understand how complex the issue we are facing is. At Alliance Climate Control, we don’t just bring the tools; we know how to use them, alongside our expert knowledge.

Electrical Fault vs. Electrical Hazard: Know the Difference

There is a difference between an electrical fault and an electrical hazard, though they often go hand in hand. An electrical fault is an abnormality in an electrical system, where electricity diverges from the correct path. An electrical hazard is the resulting danger that stems from a fault. Electrical hazards can result in harm to a person or property.

Dealing with electrical faults as soon as possible is important to protecting your family, pets, and property. There are several common electrical faults, and understanding what they are and the danger they pose is important to keeping your home safe.

For more information on electrical hazards, visit the NSW Government webpage on common electrical hazards.

Loose Terminations

Loose terminations are electrical wires, splices, or devices that are incorrectly connected or have unsecured connections to their appropriate terminals, circuit breakers, or wire nuts. This physical instability creates gaps in the electricity’s path, often causing excessive heat, electrical arcing, and system failure. These phenomena can accumulate over time and may lead to an electrical fire, melted wiring, or electric shock.

Damaged Cables

Worn-out wires, deteriorated cable insulation, and frayed wiring can all cause an electrical fault. Physical stress, environmental wear, manufacturing defects, and compounding electrical issues can all lead to cable damage. In turn, this can cause broader electrical issues.

Flooding or Water Damage

Water Ingress

Water and electricity don’t mix well. Water ingress is the infiltration of moisture or liquid into electrical systems and devices. Plumbing leaks, condensation, and heavy rain or flooding can all contribute to potential water ingress. This can lead to corrosion, short circuits, and in the worst circumstances, create lethal shock hazards due to water’s electrical conductivity.

Rodent and Vermin Damage

The presence of mice, rats and other pests in the home can cause problems as they chew through protective jackets and insulation of cables and wires. Rodents generally target wires for nesting material or to chew on to trim their teeth. Occasionally, switchboard boxes can also be affected by nesting animals or bugs, leading to the deterioration of equipment. This breakage can lead to a great risk of fire, short circuits, and electrocution.

Aging Insulation

Cables and wires have a layer of insulation (often polymer or rubber) that encases the conductive material. Over time, this insulation can erode, causing short circuits, equipment failure, and fires. Sometimes this decline is related to heavy electrical loads, weather exposure, or high voltage currents.

Frequently Asked Questions

The cost of an electrical fault detection service in Sydney will depend on the complexity of the issue, troubleshooting time, and the time and location of the job. Usually, this can be estimated to be between $120 and $350.

At Alliance Climate Control, we will always provide you with a written quote before we conduct any work on your home.

How long it takes to find an electrical fault depends on the complexity of the problem. Minor faults can usually be pinpointed in 15-30 mins, while complex issues can take up 2 or more hours. Hidden wiring is especially complex to address, as is water ingress.

We take pride in our work and want to ensure the best quality services are provided. Our electricians are available around the clock, carry all the appropriate equipment for fault finding, and aim to complete work promptly and to a high standard.

Electricians find faulty wiring through a diagnostic process. This usually involves a visual inspection of the hardware, followed by an internal inspection using a range of tools such as a megger, thermal camera, or wire tracer.

Power trips can be caused by a variety of electrical faults. The most common causes are:

  • Overloaded circuits
  • Faulty appliances
  • Damaged cords
  • Exposed wiring

To prevent electrical faults in your home, you can:

  • Conduct a safety switch test every 6 months as recommended by the NSW Government
  • Don’t overload your circuits by plugging in too many powerboards or extension cords
  • Replace and maintain your appliance cords
  • Ensure all your switchboard components are up to date
  • Have a licensed electrician conduct an Electrical Safety Check of your property
  • Never DIY your electrical work; instead, rely on accredited professionals
