Types of Surges

Surges are fluctuations in the flow of electricity through your system, causing a surplus of power to travel along circuitry and wiring. There are two types of surges in electrical systems: Internal and External.

External Surges

External surges come from outside an electrical system and interfere with the current’s flow. While external surges are less common than internal ones, they carry a significantly higher voltage and are more likely to damage appliances and your electrical systems. The most common causes of external surges are: 

  • Lightning strikes and storms 
  • Damage to power lines 
  • Power restoration 
  • Grid and capacitor bank switching to balance grid loads, causing power to be interrupted and then spike

Internal Surges

Whole-Home vs. Point-of-Use Surge Protection

When it comes to your options for surge protection, there are two ways to approach it. You can install a whole-house surge protector or a point-of-use surge protector. Both are effective and often used in tandem with one another.

How it Works A device installed directly into your switchboard that protects the entire system from surges, particularly in the case of major external surges. The SPD intercepts the spike before it enters the building’s wiring, absorbing the power or diverting it. A device, usually a powerboard or adapters, that plugs directly into individual outlets to protect appliances and devices against surges. These devices use Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) or Gas Discharge Tubes (GDTs) to absorb the excess energy and divert it to the grounding wire. Primarily, these are used for smaller voltage spikes.

Types of Surge Protection Devices

There are four types of Surge protection devices (SPDs), with each serving a specific purpose : 

  • Type 1 SPDs: The primary defensive device connected at the main service point that handles high-voltage surges. Type 1 SPDs provide the best protection from damaging external sources like a direct lightning strike.
  • Type 2 SPDs: Located in sub-distribution boards, they manage residual surges and protect downstream devices connected to them. Type 2 SPDs protect against localised surges
  • Type 3 SPDs: Plug-in devices like wall adapters or power boards that are used to protect specific appliances or electronics. Type 3 SPDs are recommended for sensitive electronics, computers or medical devices. 
  • Type 4 SPDs: Devices integrated directly into an appliance or piece of equipment, like a circuit board or motor. Type 4 SPDs tend to be device-specific. 

Type 1 and Type 2 SPDs are the most important whole-house surge protectors and the most commonly used in business and residential buildings. They work with your property’s equipotential bonding to prevent overvoltage.

How to Protect Sensitive Electronics

Protecting sensitive electronics in your home is straightforward when you know how. Be sure to have: 

  • Whole-home surge protection at your main electrical panel for large external surges and foundational grounding 
  • Plug-ins for individual consoles and entertainment systems 
  • Avoid “daisy-chains”, or plugging in multiple power boards to one another or the same circuit 
  • Connect an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to your devices 

A UPS is a device that provides an instant battery backup for computers, servers, and network modems and surge protection during a blackout. ESBA recommends a UPS that provides at least 15 minutes of power, so you can safely shut down your devices and save important files. Limits of Household Insurance for Surge Damage

Household insurance for surge damage is typically included in Home and Contents Insurance and provides coverage for damage to wiring and appliances during power surges. However, there are limitations to this kind of insurance when it comes to surge damage, including:

  • Strict requirements in proving the surge’s cause
  • Surges caused by power grid fluctuations are excluded  
  • Often excludes replacing items over 10 years old 
  • Premium cover is often required for motor breakdowns 
  • The cost of replacing damaged surge protectors and switchboards falls on the owner
