Consumer Mains Upgrade for Sydney Homes

What Are Consumer Mains?

Consumer Mains image

Consumer mains are the supply cables that connect your switchboard to your network’s point-of-attachment (POA), which then connects your property to the broader power grid via the service mains. These supply cables are either overhead lines that run from a private utility pole to your home, or underground lines trenched through from a pillar or pit.

The POA is the boundary line between your distribution network and your property, which makes you legally responsible for maintaining your consumer mains cables. When work needs to be conducted on your consumer mains, Electricians Sydney by Alliance (ESBA) have Accredited Service Provider (ASP) Level 2 Electricians who are specially certified to work directly with the connection between your home and service lines.

Our ASP Level 2 electricians work within these boundary lines every day, so you know the job will be carried out safely and to the standard your network operator requires.

When You Need a Consumer Mains Upgrade

Consumer mains are critical to your electrical system and ensure safe energy consumption for your home. For this reason, there are times when repairs or upgrades are required. Reasons for an upgrade may include:

  • Three-phase power upgrades that increase your home’s load capacity to accommodate high-draw home appliances (e.g., EV chargers, ducted ACs, etc.)
  • Switchboard upgrades where consumer mains are affected or need to be made compliant with electrical installation and wiring standards
  • Replace old, damaged, or weak cables
  • Replace undersized 6mm cables with compliant 16mm XLPE to meet modern power demands

Common signs you may need a consumer mains upgrade are:

  • Frequent electrical faults and tripping breakers
  • Flickering lights
  • Buzzing near your electrical panel
  • Receiving a defect notice from your Distribution Network Service Provider (DNSP), usually either Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy

Regardless of the work that needs to be done on your consumer mains, Electricians Sydney by Alliance (ESBA) are up to the task. We have dedicated services for Three-phase Power Upgrades and Switchboard Upgrades, as well as consumer mains upgrades.

No matter the complexity, our fully licensed and experienced electricians can handle the job.

ESBA operates Sydney-wide and offers a lifetime workmanship warranty and 100% service satisfaction guarantee, so by the end of our work, you know you’ll be happy!

What About Service Mains?

Service mains are the cables that connect your home to the distribution network via the POA. Like consumer mains, these cables can be either overhead or underground lines. DNSPs own and maintain the overhead cables up until the POA, but any underground lines are the property owner’s responsibility.

When You Need a Service Mains Upgrade

Because DNSPs are responsible for operating and maintaining service mains, any electrical services that deal with your property’s connection to them need approval from your electricity provider. These services include:

Periodically, Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy will conduct inspections and maintenance on your service lines. Over time, cracks, leaks, and test failures can be found and need to be fixed to comply with electrical safety standards. This service often involves repairs or upgrades to an Aerial Bundled Cable (ABC), which is safer and more durable during storms. This will involve interruptions to your power and access to your property.

DNSP Approvals: What to Know

Before any upgrades to your consumer mains can be carried out, your ASP needs to file a Services Works Request with your DNSP after their site assessment. Your DNSP will be either Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy.

To begin your application process, you will need to visit either Ausgrid’s Connection Portal or Endeavour Energy’s Connection Portal. Approval for this work can take 1-3 weeks, depending on its complexity.

Our Level 2 electricians will help you through this process and make sure all the appropriate paperwork is lodged on your behalf.

AS/NZS 3000 Compliance for Mains Upgrades

P1034136

AS/NZS 3000 is the core electrical safety standard that dictates the design, construction, and verification of all electrical work carried out in Australia and New Zealand. When it comes to consumer mains, this standard outlines:

  • Precise sizing for cables that align with your maximum demand
  • Voltage drop must be kept under 5% from the supply origin to the final outlet
  • Unprotected consumer mains must be enclosed appropriately
  • During consumer mains upgrades, your property’s earthing and bonding need to be reviewed and adjusted accordingly

ESBA is a team of experienced electricians who work compliantly with all Australian electrical standards. We are fully insured to conduct electrical work on residential and commercial properties, with quality workmanship.

Consumer Mains Upgrade Process

Consumer mains upgrades are complex and can take time, but ESBA is here to help you through the process and ensure your upgrade runs smoothly:

  1. Home Inspection: We always begin with a home inspection of your electrical system and property’s layout to understand what we’re working with.
  2. Safety Check: During our home inspection, we’ll also ensure that the necessary safety precautions are in place.
  3. Paperwork: We’ll submit your upgrade application to your DNSP once our inspection is complete.
  4. Quote: Before any work begins, you’ll receive a written quote and a full rundown of the process. We offer transparent pricing, so we won’t start work until you’ve signed off.
  5. Getting the Job Done: Once all the t’s are crossed and the i’s are dotted, we’ll put in the hard yards to get your consumer mains upgraded.
  6. The Final Test: After our work is complete, we’ll test everything to ensure it’s safe and operational. Then we’ll reconnect you to the power grid. You’ll receive a Certificate of Compliance at the end.

At ESBA, we have a 100% service satisfaction guarantee and a lifetime workmanship warranty. That means we’re not happy until you’re happy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A point of attachment (POA) is the location where the service mains connect to your property and deliver power. The consumer mains are attached at this point as well and carry on this connection to the switchboard. The POA also acts as a delineator between where the network ends and your electrical system begins.

The reason you have a private power pole is most likely because your home is recessed too far away from your street’s supply points and you need a dedicated service line to reach it.

How much a consumer mains upgrade costs will depend on what type of upgrade you require. Typically, any work on consumer mains for residential property ranges between $1,500 and $7,000

With ESAB, you’ll receive a written quote and have the last say before we begin any work.

Your consumer mains may need an upgrade if your cables are:

  • Aged
  • Undersized
  • Damaged

Look out for these warning signs:

  • Frequent breaker trips
  • Flickering light when large appliances are in use
  • Burning smells and scorch marks at the switchboard

You will also need one if you receive a defect notice from your DNSP or are looking to upgrade from a single-phase power supply.

ESBA’s ASP Level 2 electricians are available to assess your electrical system and help you determine whether you may need an upgrade, repair, or another solution.

Reach out to us today on (02) 8331 6785 or book online.

How long it takes to perform an upgrade or repair on consumer mains depends on the complexity of the work and the condition of your electrical system.

The physical repair or replacement usually takes 4 to 8 hours. Large, more complex upgrades can take 2 to 10 weeks and involve:

  • Site inspections
  • Lodging paperwork
  • Council approvals

When conducting a consumer mains upgrade, ESBA will help you every step of the way. We conduct comprehensive site inspections, submit paperwork, and do all the hard labour and testing afterwards. With our 100% service satisfaction guarantee, you’re in good hands with ESBA.
