Ducted vs. Unducted Exhaust Fans

When installing an exhaust fan in your home, you will need to decide between ducted and unducted exhaust fan units. Both have key features that are beneficial to different areas of the home.

Ducted

Ducted exhaust fan units capture stale air and moisture from inside the room and push them through a duct to disperse outdoors. A roof cowl or eave vent is the key mechanism that allows this air to exit.

Ducted exhaust fans are most effective in rooms with high moisture content, like bathrooms, showers, and kitchens. This installation helps remove steam and cooking odours from the space, and reduces mould growth and physical damage.

Unducted

Unducted, or non-ducted, exhaust fans are exactly what it sounds like. Instead of using a piping duct, the fan pulls the air from the room through a filter, which is then recirculated into the room. This filter traps odours, grease, and dust, preventing them from reentering the room.

Unducted units are best for small spaces where ductwork cannot be utilised. They are generally cheaper to install, but are not able to filter steam or moisture. These filters also need to be cleaned or replaced to remain effective.

NCC Ventilation Requirements for Your Home

The National Construction Code requires all Australian homes to have adequate indoor air quality and to manage condensation within the property. Part 3.8.5 and Part 10.6 are key in outlining ventilation requirements for bathrooms, kitchens, and laundries. These requirements include:

Natural ventilation: All habitable rooms require 5% of the floor area or a mechanical ventilation system to be equal to the area of windows or other natural ventilation mechanisms.
Airflow rates in Litres per second (L/s):
- Bathrooms: 25 L/s
- Kitchens & Laundries: 40 L/s
Ducting to Outdoors: All exhaust air must be directly ducted outdoors and never into the ceiling space, roof cavity, or sub-floor area
Enclosed Bathrooms: If a bathroom does not have a window or the openable area is less than 5% of the floor area, a mechanical exhaust system must run continuously or be linked to a 10-minute timer.

An exhaust fan can also filter out unpleasant odours and harmful chemicals that are present in the air.

NCC Requirements: The NCC requires mechanical ventilation (exhaust fans) for bathrooms without a window. Motion sensors and timers installed with these units need to remain on for at least 10 minutes after you exit the room.

Kitchen Exhaust Fans

Kitchen exhaust fans are essential for extracting cooking fumes, smoke, grease, and steam produced by your stove and oven. Not providing an exhaust fan or rangehood for your kitchen can lead to building up grease, smoke damage, staining, mould growth, and structural deterioration.

NCC Requirements: A minimum extraction rate of 40 L/s for mechanical ventilation in kitchens is required, as the level of moisture and airborne contaminants is higher in the space.

Fan Type Recommendation: Ceiling-mounted or Wall-mounted units

Laundry Room Ventilation

Laundry room equipment, such as washing machines and dryers, produces a substantial amount of heat and moisture when used. This requires an exhaust fan to reduce condensation on windows, walls, and floors. Some bleaches, laundry liquids, and cleaning equipment stored in the space can release contaminants into the air. Exhaust fans help filter out these pollutants.

NCC Requirements: The airflow capacity for a domestic laundry is 40 L/s and requires 6 to 15 air changes per hour without a dryer and 15 to 25 air changes per hour with a dryer.

Fan Type Recommendation: Inline ducted fans, wall-mounted, or ceiling-mounted units.

Replacement vs. New Exhaust Fan Installation

There are two types of exhaust fan installation jobs: replacement of an old fitting or installing a whole new unit. Occasionally, an old unit will breakdown and you’ll call us to replace it; other times, you want to install a whole new unit into a room without one. The complexity and procedures for each of these jobs will vary.
