Three-Phase Power Upgrade

Future-Proof Your Home with a Three-Phase Upgrade

Our lifestyles change, and when they do, our electrical systems may have to change with us. Most Australian homes run on a single-phase power, which is enough to power everyday appliances and electronics safely and efficiently.

However, using heavy-duty appliances like workshop tools, pool pumps, and AC units, your property requires a three-phase power system to properly distribute the electrical load of your system. The benefits of three-phase power are:

  • Better voltage stability
  • Less frequent circuit breaker trips
  • Higher load capacity for your electrical system
  • Even load balance
  • Smoother operations for motorised devices like pool pumps or large ACs
  • Reliable, continuous power
  • Supports large solar systems and additional electric vehicle charging units

Getting a three-phase power upgrade can prepare your home for future high-power installations like solar power and can increase your home’s property value. When the time is right, contact Electricians Sydney by Alliance for efficient, professional, and reliable electrical upgrades. We’re prepared to work with you every step of the way, from the paperwork and inspection to getting on the tools.

Why is a Switchboard Important 1

When You Need a Three-Phase Upgrade

You need a three-phase upgrade when your property’s electrical demands exceed your single-phase system’s capacity. If you use high-draw appliances or commercial-grade equipment, they can overload your property’s electrical system. Similarly, some solar systems, electric vehicle chargers and home motors require three-phase power to operate safely.

22kW EV charger

Plenty of commercial EV chargers have 7kW to 11kW capacities and suit residential properties with single-phase power systems. However, for homes or business properties with multiple EVs or those that require faster charging and longer driving ranges, a 22kW EV charger is necessary. This type of charger requires a three-phase power supply to operate safely.

For more information on EV Charger Installation, read our dedicated service page.

Workshops with Heavy Machinery

Workshop equipment such as:

  • Woodwork machinery
  • Metalwork equipment
  • Welding tools
  • Cutting equipment (plasma cutters)

All have heavy-duty electrical draw that can put a great deal of strain on your system. Because they have such high torque and heating demands, they require systems to evenly distribute their power. So, if you have a woodwork hobby or work in industrial settings, a three-phase upgrade will be required for safe use.

Large Ducted AC

HVAC systems and large ducted home ACs have high energy loads. For better energy efficiency and to prevent overloads, it’s important to have a three-phase system to distribute power evenly. This prevents tripped breakers, flickering lights, and supports smoother equipment operations.

Energy Intensive Appliances

Other heavy-duty home appliances can also be high-energy drawers. These include:

  • Pool equipment
  • Induction cooktops
  • Instant hot water systems
  • Solar panel systems with a capacity that exceeds 5kW
  • Whole-home backup battery storage systems

What’s Involved in a Three-Phase Upgrade

A three-phase upgrade can be a complex process and requires a lot of planning and preparation. We’ve broken it down into these simple steps:

  1. Home Inspection & Safety Check: We’ll inspect your property’s electrical system and do a load calculation of your current system and the planned appliances. This will determine if an upgrade is necessary.
  2. Paperwork: Before work begins, you will need to apply to your Distribution Network Service Provider (DNSP) for approval to upgrade your supply. We’ll help you with this process. Once your application is approved, we will have a better understanding of what work needs to be done.
  3. Meter Box & Switchboard: To accommodate your three-phase power supply, your meter box will be upgraded, along with your existing switchboard. This stage will also include circuit balancing and Residual Current Device (RCD) installation.
  4. Service Line Connection: New overhead and underground service lines will be run from your street to your property, then connected.
  5. Cable Links: Finally, two additional wire conductors will be installed and linked to your circuit.
  6. Test: After everything is installed, we’ll test your new fan and make sure it’s in working order.

At Electricians Sydney by Alliance, we have a 100% service satisfaction guarantee and a lifetime workmanship warranty. That means we won’t stop working until you’re happy with our work.

Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy Approval Requirements

Switchboard Upgrade - Rosebay, January 2026

Before your power upgrade can occur, you will need to comply with your local Distribution Network Service Provider (DNSP). They are in charge of the physical infrastructure of your electricity supply. Your DNSP will either be Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy.

To begin your application process, you will need to visit either Ausgrid’s Connection Portal or Endeavour Energy’s Connection Portal. Approval for this work can take 1-3 weeks, depending on its complexity.

Additionally, a regular electrician cannot conduct a three-phase upgrade. Only a Level 2 ASP can perform the required work. They will also need to conduct the site assessment and submit a connection application to your DNSP on your behalf. Once this is approved, work can begin on your property.

Luckily, you’re in good hands with Electricians Sydney by Alliance. We ensure all our electrical work is performed by accredited electricians who are fully insured to work on your property. We won’t stop work until your electrical system is operating efficiently and safely.

Frequently Asked Questions

In NSW, the average cost for a three-phase power upgrade is between $4,000 and $10,000. This range will vary depending on:

  • Your property’s infrastructure
  • DNSP connection fees
  • Complexity of your street’s service infrastructure

A three-phase power upgrade requires:

  • A switchboard upgrade
  • Re-cabling from your street to your property
  • Service line upgrade
  • Approval from your DNSP
  • An ASP Level 2 electrician to carry out the upgrade
  • New metering

Yes. You can upgrade single-phase power to three-phase power. Though single-phase power is sufficient for most Australian homes, if you have heavy-duty or commercial-grade equipment in use on your property, you will likely need a three-phase upgrade.

Whether a three-phase upgrade is worth it depends on your electrical needs. If you have multiple high-draw appliances like EV chargers, pool pumps, large ducted ACs, or heavy-duty equipment in use, then a power upgrade is likely necessary.
